Stummkino Delphi on Gustav Adolf str. 2, is a historical place from 1920s. One of the world’s first movie theatres and best preserved examples of the glamour and decadence of 1920’s Berlin. Here were screened many tremendous films, including the famous Cabinet of Dr. Caligari! The surrealist theater/silent film project Exposure Berlin brings a new long awaited premier on the October 12th!
History
Berlin in 20s was the special place, people from all over the world were coming here to experience the unexperienced before. These period of time is usually called Golden Twenties. This fertile culture of Berlin extended onwards until Adolf Hitler rose to power in early 1933 and stamped out any and all resistance to the Nazi Party. Likewise, the Nazis decried Berlin as a haven of vice.

Film was making huge technical and artistic strides during this period of time in Berlin, and gave rise to the influential movement called German Expressionism.
In the 1920’s, Filmstadt Weißensee, the now almost forgotten area in northern Berlin; once was the city’s cultural hotspot. Stars like Marlene Dietrich and Fritz Lang were there, which at that time was lined with bright lights and 20 cinema houses.
This building was one of the first cinemas of its size in the world, and the original interior of this former 870 seat theater remains intact. It is one of the best remaining examples of the glamour and flair of this important cultural era – the heyday of German silent film. With its orchestra pit and perfect dome acoustic, it is an extraordinary venue!

Exposure Berlin
Exposure Berlin is a surrealist theater/silent film project, taking its inspiration from French surrealism and German Expressionism, as an homage to the artistic and social movements of 1920’s Berlin.
The project is simultaneously theater piece and live silent film shoot, fusing it all with brand-new avant-garde musical, set and fashion compositions. The piece involves new music performed by a live orchestra, opera, and surrealist video animation. It will be performed in English, French, and German, with the intention that anyone who speaks one of these languages will be able to follow and enjoy the play.
Exposure Berlin offers the chance to personally experience this awe-inspiring atmosphere, which has been closed to the general public for the last 70 years.
Premier October 12th
Award-winning Per Aspera Productions brings avant-garde theater, music, and video arts together for a one-of-a-kind project in a historic location.
It is based on the 1917 French play Les Mamelles de Tirésias by Appolinaire, the work for which the word surrealism was invented, and deals with issues of gender roles and identification. The newly composed music for the piece will be performed live by a 12-piece orchestra, and opera singer, and the action onstage will be projected as a live silent film in the style of the 1920’s, as an hommage to our performance space.
